my pumpkin progress

every morning I sew a little before work
yeah I know   I am up early and it is MY time
nice and quiet and peaceful

well this little guy was born from some
orange coins that were a small 4 inch square
I played with dark blues for background
and I like it! I just HAD to add a face to this
cutie and I think it may become either a
mugrug or a potholder

I also have been working on this runner
taking my slabs and making pumpkins

these were the extra slabs as I needed to play
to see how those others will go together-
the ones that started out as HST pinwheels etc

love that border

so far this week this is what I have accomplished

I made lunch for work so now
Dunks and I will meet you in the sewing room

<3

and while we are at it
lets make some goodies to
sustain us while we are slabbing away

JulieRose from julierosequilts sent in this one.........
sounds so yummy1

Here's another recipe that we all like a lot....

PUMPKIN PIE BARS:
(I make these at Thanksgiving
for the "night before cooks" LOL))

1 and 1/3 cup flour
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cups (1 and 1/2 sticks) cold butter or margarine
1 cup old fashioned oats
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 pkg  (8 oz) Cream cheese (softened)
3 eggs
1 can (15 oz) pumpkin
1 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice

PREHEAT oven to 350 degrees. Line  13x9 inch baking pan with foil; grease foil lining.  Let foil overhang a bit...
Mix flour, brown sugar and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar in medium bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in oats and pecans. Reserve 1 cup of oat mixture; press remaining mix onto bottom of pan.  Bake 15 minutes.

BEAT cream cheese, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, eggs, pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice in small bowl with electric mixer on med. speed until well blended.  Pour over crust; sprinkle with reserved crumb mix.

BAKE 25 min. Lift from pan using foil as handle; cool completely. Cut into 24 bars.
Store leftover bars in tightly covered container in Refrigerator.
E N J O Y;)))
hugs, Julierose🙋🌹🍰

the Christmas box so far

lets take a look and see where I am at
this cute dog coat for nieces dog
a steal at 2.50  some treats and
Brody is done!

this cute kitchen towel for brother in ME
his hunting cabin will certainly be spruced up a bit
with the addition of some deer potholders
and maybe some microwave bowls
I would like to knit a deer dishcloth too
just for fun

these little tuck in gifts of mugrugs
I like to have a stack on hand
you never know when one will
be needed and appreciated
hubs likes them too!

another kitchen towel in lime green
for a modern Christmas look
or Grinch theme
we will see where it leads

a purple dishcloth

some coasters
if I could only work with wood
I would love to make a wooden holder
for them
to stack on the end table
how fun

some zip bags
these can be cute little neighbor gifts
filled with goodies
or scratch tickets
or nail polish and emery boards or
what ever else you can think of

a pretty sunflower table topper
not sure yet if for me or not
may have to make some more of these

more zippy bags

another little topper or mugrug
cute in the blues

not a bad start........

trouble is this is most of the SMALL stuff
NOW I need to get onto the BIG stuff

this needs to be put together
still contemplating whether to put white around
each square or not
I think I have a jelly roll and that may make it
big enough and showcase the purples
and pinks
hoping to finish for granddaughter for Christmas

need to finish slabbing and make a border out of this one
for my daughter

yeah no pressure right?

think I need to quit my day job.LOL

and this needs to be worked on as well.
I just may have to stall this till after the holidays........

I DID make a lot of progress though on it
I need to buy a journal and document the stories that go with the blocks
for a family heirloom quilt
that would be cool........

do YOU  make things for Christmas gifts?
I am lucky our family appreciates handmade gifts

my brother is hopefully working on my
squirrel feeder
he said he was anyway.......

**wink wink**

another diversion

this has been fun to work on in between
all the orange

I get bored very easy
you couldnt tell right?

I think I have about 15 of these 9 patch blocks
so many more need to be done

here are some strips I made and subcut
now to find more blue and
cut it up

then onto some lights

TO MAKE THIS:

YEAH CHECK IT OUT AT BUTTERFLY THREADS

A CUTE WAY TO USE UP SCRAPS
and I certainly have those

these are all made with 2 1/2 inch squares so
charms and jellyrolls work too
if you have some hanging around

I have TWO bins with blue fabric so
figured I would tame it and use some up

this would look really nice on my bed
just sayin.........

I am still on step one as I am doing it in between
other projects but I think
I will love it once it is done

three types of blocks to make
the colored 9 patch
the offwhite/white 9 patch
and a 9 patch with half white and half colored
using HST in the center of the rows

easy peasy and fun

are you playing in YOUR stash?
what cha making?

Can I see?

where my slabs are heading now

one little mug rug

two little mug rugs

one pumpkin tested with a light yellow background
I think I like it

I'm so excited........and I think I like it.......
(are you singing yet?) LOL

and some pumpkins at the ready for a runner
I just need to pull the background fabric
and do the triangle corners
maybe 2 inch squares will do the trick
**update**
2 inch squares seem to be a good size for
an 8 ish inch slab

then do the stems with the moldy hay
fabric LOL

gotta kind of work this one backwards
because I found this beautiful Fall piece in the stash
that I want to use as a border

was waiting for my gray to come in but am thinking
of just picking a beigy neutral and getting this done

**update~ gonna try the light yellow instead**

I am thinking the 4 pumpkins for the center
all facing the same way
and then a border of this pretty Fall fabric

my niece who is getting married in October
 LOVES the FALL
and I am thinking this may look great
on her  kitchen table

the wedding

this is how I spent my Sunday
making flowers for a wedding
both the gal and her fiance are Marines and
he will be home for Labor day week and
they want to tie the knot then
poor thing......her family is giving her a hard time
they want the huge fancy wedding
the couple does NOT
they just want to do it and be married
so she is trying to make them happy by meeting
in the middle with a garden wedding
she loves sunflowers and blue roses
so this is what we did

this is her bouquet copied after one on pinterest
it came out very close and is prettier than in this photo
I am not a photographer for sure

the roses alone are boutonnieres for groom and groomsmen
the sunflower boutonnieres for Dads and granddads

this is the maid of honor bouquet

and the bridesmaid

and these are for the Moms and Grams

all in all we made quite a few of everything
and had flowers left over for tables and cake
AND brought some back to get her money back
for those we didnt need

a fun day was spent doing these with my niece...........

one monkey off my back.........

now to dress myself for another wedding coming up

anyone else hate dress shopping???

working on the UFO pile

this little cutie has been in the UFO pile for a while
and for no good reason
I have batting and backing
and just need to get to it!

so in no time it was stitched up lickety split

and now to find batting big enough for
the matching kite piece

no Mom! You can't take my batting bed!
I wont let you.......nope!
lil buggar

I had to wrestle him for the large piece
he was claiming

now I can finish up that set and put them into the box

a cats life is very tough
dont you agree?

*** update***

this set of toppers is now in the gift box
ALL DONE!
can I get a high five?
YEAH

hopefully back to our regularly scheduled program

this needs to be done

I am thinking now
because it is so big
that it should be a wallhanging
instead of a quilt

so I picked a pretty
"green nail polish color"
and I think this will be
for the niece

it is harder than you think to pick out the fabrics
as you need it to look like
the shiny strip to make it look
3D

but I am liking this green so far
now onto some light grays
and black and gray

and to pick a background color..........

was thinking a polish on the front
and a lipstick on the back

my niece will like that she can
turn it
to suit how she feels

pumpkin memories

In honor of my Moms birthday today I am giving out her "recipe" that we loved as children

It wasnt really a recipe at all.
she took her pumpkin pie  recipe and instead of making it into a normal size pie

she did this

she put the dough into muffin tins
and made individual pies that us kids could hold in our hands

Do you know what it was like to bring one of these babies to school in your lunchbox?

HEAVEN I tell you.............you could bribe a teacher for all As, tell the bullies to take a hike

yeah they are THAT good
and of course

My Mom being the smart cookie she was, knew that with 5 hungry kids and a hubby

a pie would not last very long once it was out of the oven........

but with these...........she would make a dozen

and they would last a little longer...........

yeah, I come from good stock! My Mom was a genious!   just sayin...........

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!  and brother CHUCK  and first niece ALICIA!

Yep  ALL THREE born on the same day.......3 generations!  how cool is that?

how are your pumpkins coming along? are you slabbing with us? eating your way through the pumpkin patch?  no worries.......even if you just came for the recipes we are happy you are here

hoping to be playing with these soon
not sure if I want a cream background
or gray
or?

but I see them as 4 pumpkins all  in a row
on a cute table runner

gotta measure out that Fall fabric and see
how I can make the border fit

don't cha hate when you have to do Math???
but my Math teachers would be proud
all those long homework sessions
of Algebra and trigonometry
and calculus
should have been useful for
SOMETHING right? LOL

now if I can just remember some of it ha ha
I think I need another pumpkin pie tart! hee hee

did anyone else tumble?

no I dont mean my episode with the butterfly bush stump
I mean tumbling with Bonnie Hunter a while back

I decided I wanted to make a tumbler quilt
the little 2 1/2 inch ones
yeah cause I am crazy that way
AND I have tons of scraps

so I cut and cut and cut
(no I do not have one of those fancy cutting machines)
and then I sewed and sewed and sewed

see here how the ends of the rows go one up , one down?

yeah when I was on a sewing spree I didnt pay attention

see?
they are all the same way

AND this WHOLE TUB OF ROWS is that way
GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

yeah I am TUMBLING FAST  these past months! lol

so off to rippit and take one off each end and attach it to the other end
anyone wanna come over and help? LOL

another little finish

remember this guy?
yeah    scary..... LOL

I was playing around with it
because I didnt like the dark in there
I didnt like the stem
heck I didnt like the pumpkin shape!
so I made some little leaves to hide the ugly stem
and added a 4 patch to make a mugrug

Ok Mom........enough with the orange pumpkins!
doesnt he look thrilled???? LOL
you think he wanted me off the computer?
naw.......I didnt think that either!

this was how I was SUPPOSED to put the stem on
but............
when you sew before coffee.........
I put it on sideways
and I am not as happy with it
but I can live with it

I finished it up
with some pumpkin quilting and mimicked that in
the empty space just for fun
now  hubs and I both have Fall mugrugs to use

yep, hubs likes them as much as I do!
dont you like my purty Fall picture setup? LOL
those cats eyes........mesmerizing
arent they?
I know
Jacky is rubbing off on me
I will have to have a whole room of props now
to take pictures ha ha

how are your orange slabs coming along?
are you making some Fall things with them?
I am thinking runners and potholders may be next

linking up with sewfreshquilts.

see my pumpkin big and round

I had one of those marathon sewing sessions
I just wanted to slab away
and slab away I did
I was a chain sewing maniac
(no not chain saw.......hee hee)

so much that this is all that is left in my orange
bin

so now I need to do something with those slab pieces
so I picked one
and squared it up to about 5 inches square

found a long strip of white that I can use

cut out 4  2inch squares to make the corners of the
pumpkin

sewed them on and then sewed the quarter
inch away

I KNOW I KNOW I AM A SICK PERSON
but they are so durned cute those
little HST LOL

see? I told ya!
CUTIE PETUTIES

and I got FOUR of them to play with later

I then took a piece of brown
and the strips of white
and made a stem
but my stem was weird

hey pumpkins dont all have perfect stems you know!
I also see I turned the pumpkin the other way with
the strips going sideways
see what happens when you dont pay attention?

ok can I distract from  the imperfections with a funny face?
 nah

but you COULD make this into a Halloween pumpkin
see my crooked crazy stem?
yeah......needs some leaves
so I just grabbed green and cut
freehand shapes

lookin a little better
I will like it better when it is quilted up I think

because of the size
I am making this one into another mugrug
so I grabbed Fall colored squares I had
hanging around
and added them to the side

now for another day I will find a back and
batting piece and quilt it up and bind

see how easy it is to make something out of your slabs?
my larger ones will make a nice runner I am thinking

I am envisioning the 'fancy ones that started with pinwheels etc"
to become a 4 pumpkin runner

then some of these pumpkins above I am thinking
would make a nice set of 4 placemats
and maybe matching potholders

we will see
I have quite a few Fall birthdays coming up
and these would be great for Fall decorating

how are your orange slabs coming along?

***update***
there were a few more sewing minutes
and full bobbins so this is what I did..

just loving that moldy straw stem! LOL

a cute lil pumpkin
I will make some more and make a runner
out of 2? 4?  we will see
so far I am liking it
I used a 2 inch strip of the background fabric
cut 4  2inch squares for corners
and then used the rest for the borders putting
the sides on first
then cutting the bottom
and then cutting the other piece in half to add the stem
and then eyeballing it to "center it"
yep  real precise sewing going on here ha ha

I love this sign in my living room
reminding me to cherish the simple things

for the simple things in life are what
life is all about isnt it?
