i really am sewing

remember the dump quilting? well, I had so much fun. I found this cute green stripe in my stash and made binding. just need to sew it on and that.... 4 potholders ready to go!

I love my scraps!!!

paper or plastic

what is it about a paper bag and a cat
to entertain your cat just get out a noise needed.......
just something about the darkness inside........or maybe seeing if someone, something is in there?

I am really not sure what the fascination is......but it works every time!

they will circle the bag and paw at it and peek inside.......see if it is alive......

and both get in on the act.......        I choose paper when I can! LOL

Dunkin saves the day

pssssstt phoebe ........... whats in here?
Dunkin I  have no idea ......... let me take a look.

Let the master take a look!

It is too  dark in there! WAIT !!! I think I see something small and square and delicious its a its a treat!!!!!!
Dunkin you saved the day again!

                                                                    I LOVE YOU DUNKIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no pictures today

Today I go back to work after having one week off. No wonder they don't like for you to take vacation! I could get used to just staying  home...........LOL

except the piper would expect to be workey, no money.  grrr........

I have sewn many things but can not show you. They are Christmas gifts. Soon I will be able to get back into the swing of things and show some progress.

Do any of you keep lists? I have a list of things I have done/made for the year. It kind of puts things into perspective as sometimes you feel like your efforts are non productive but when you see all that you have accomplished in the month etc then you realize that you have done something.

In the course of a year according to my past records, I end up accomplishing about 50-60 things done. Some may be small projects like a baby hat or pair of earrings for a gift but what that means is about one project a week which I think is reasonable. I will try and top it this year with a few more but no promises. I do have lots still to do for Christmas but hopefully it will take some of the money stress out of the equation for us. So much already to worry about in this terrible economy. We will be losing our jobs probably by next August or so. That means we are trying to live beneath our means and stash away like squirrels for the future. hopefully it is enough and do-able. I don't want to lose our car which we just got 2 yrs ago. I normally bought second hand and took the money out of the savings so no car payments. Of course NOW that I have car payments, I am losing the job, right?  It will all work out. Just stressful times as I am sure many others are going through too.

This week that I had off I did some Fall cleaning and rearranging of tieback holders in all rooms of the apartment. I also sewed 2 buttons on for someone and made 13 potholders. 5 of those are finished and the rest are in progress. I also brought 2 cats tothe vets for annual checkup and shots. Got a pile of stuff sectioned off for yard sale stuff. all in all it was a productive week. I still have more I need to do but if I do a little every day, I think I will get there.

have a great day all!

lookie what I found in the scraps

I was doing some more "dump quilting" while relaxing the other night. I found a little Christmas penguin so decided to pull reds and greens. This is what resulted. an adorable Christmas potholder!

So I went looking for more cuteness and found this!  and continued to sew.

combine them with an all green or all red dump quilted fabric and a cute little set will result.
what a happy little find!
cute eh?

light challenge with Victoria of 15 minutes fame

Victoria of had a lights challenge where you pick your light fabrics and sew to make fabric. I then cut into 8inch square. I think it will go well with my other color challenge fabrics. I made some red, green, and blue so far. I will play in the scraps and see what other color families I can find. I don't think I have much orange but have made a Halloween quilt so you never know. My lights as you can see read "baby" LOL. I guess that is the only time I use them in a quilt. hhmmmmm...... makes one think......

vacation or staycation or what

I finally have a week off from work.( the kind you get paid to do) BUT I dont know if you could call it a "vacation". or even a "Staycation". It is more like a "workcation". LOL

BUT I will have my house hopefully all nice and spiffy for the winter months. I really need to get some things outta here so will make areas for "yard sale" stuff and another for "give away" and go to town. really need to cull as we inherited things when moving mother in law into a home and also when brother in law passed away. I only have a 4 room apartment!

so cull it is!

want to start with new bed pillows and some new blinds and get windows and curtains all done too. If I do one room a day I SHOULD have some time to sew. what do you think???? LOL

Christmas ornaments anyone?

My niece wanted to get started on her Christmas things too so asked if she could paint something. HMMMMM........I got it! salt dough ornaments!  She was tickled pink!
the recipe is simple. 2 c flour, 1 c salt, 1 c water.  mix and knead till dough is smooth. roll, bake (we use microwave at 1 min intervals till hard but not burnt)
Here they are all baked and ready to go.She had fun rolling the dough and using the cookie cutters.

dont they look good enough to eat? she will have a ball painting them and then sealing them to preserve them for a while. I have some that I made in 1989! (er, I mean my Grandmother made them. I cant be that old! LOL)

what is it ........what is it

This little guy last yeqr was so sure.....or was he?. I asked him if he would like a small refrigerator for his bedroom and his eyes lit up. He says to me "yeah Grammie then I wouldnt have to go all the way to the kitchen to get a snack" so all the months leading to Christmas he thought he was getting a fridge. I even had a HUGE box for him under the tree. (it was to fit his bedrest pillow that he got with his other things) dont worry, he got electronics too! LOL

Christmas day he was so smug "knowing" what was in the big box. He told his dad, watch, I can guess what this is! When he opened it, I got a look like WHAT? it was priceless. He goes grammie YOU FOOLED ME! surprises are the best!

Santas workshop

speaking of the holidays I found this picture of one of my nieces from last year. She made ALL of her Christmas gifts including 3 lap quilts! It is nice to know someone will carry on sewing after I am gone. She made her dad, boyfriend and boyfriends mom each a lap quilt, made my sister and I gorgeous coupon 3 ring binders covers with pockets and handles to look like a purse, made her smaller cousins each a laptop desk with wood and stuffed fabric with bean bag pellets, and also made them each a bedrest pillow that looks like the back of a chair. 4 of those, she made her girlfriends wallets, one cousin who had a small baby she made bibs and boppy and carriage cover. What an industrious little gal she was! and they all came out fabulous! well received by everyone who was lucky enough to be on her Christmas list. she and I also had some quality time together sewing and laughing. she was very serious in this picture but we did have lots of fun.

hmmmmmm...........maybe I can borrow some of her patterns?.........just sayin

favorite gift

With the upcoming holidays and my job ending soon, money will be tight so I was just wondering from all you people in blogland, what is your favorite handmade gift of all?  Is it something useful for electronic devices like a kindle cover?  Is it something to wear like slippers? Or for the kitchen like  a towel set?

I will do something fun for the grandkids by doing a spin on the 12 days of Christmas. starting on Dec 14 they will open a small gift each day until Christmas eve. Sort of as a countdown as well. I will put some things in there such as rice bags to heat up and warm your tootsies in the coming colder months, maybe some favorite candy, etc. For example granddaughter loves hot oatmeal so a box I think has 9 packets. that will be for day 9. socks or mittens will be day 2 (pair)  jacks is for day 12   .and I won't tell you the rest because of spying eyes but you get the picture.

I guess I am practical because I like things I can use. homemade jams, socks, handknit dishcloths etc. This year with the impending loss of the job, as people leave they are not replacing them. I had a staff of 6 which will now be a staff of 10. I also have to think what will I do for them for the holidays as well.

Here are some ideas I had. Let me know what your favorite would be.........
                                          table runners
                                           candle mats
                                           mugs and mug rugs
                                          jams, jellies
                                          homemade breads, banana, zuchinni, etc
                                          cookies or candies
                                          scratch toickets
Yankee swap? maybe with a grand prize for person with highest number

what would YOU like for Christmas?

does the saying go let sleeping cats lie?
or does it only pertain to dogs?

I think I will heed the saying anyways just to avoid bad luck

you just never know..........
besides they are just too darned cute! or is it because I am their mama? LOL

dump quilting on the holiday

see what  15 minutes of play or "dump quilting" can yield? I grabbed my scrap basket and pulled out some greens  and a couple other colors and just sewed them into fabric pieces.
then I cut those into 8 inch squares.layered it with thermal batting  and a backing,
and quilted straight lines.
trimmed up to 7 inches and added binding and loops

voila~. handy dandy potholders. made 9 of them in about one hour. not too bad. all I have left to do is find some greens to bind and then will handstitch down the back of the binding. some nice handwork. (I know, I am one of those crazy women who doesn't mind hand sewing binding. I find it relaxing)

hmmmmmm..... now where are those towels I bought last year to applique?  Can I make a matching set? green trees?  says holiday but not  too obvioously so can be used year round.

I must keep my purchases in a seperate box for easy retrieval.  note to self..............or do I go shopping again? LOL

HE IS LUCKY HE IS CUTE!!!!!!          lol

cant show you projexts that I am working on for the holidays. family reads the blog once in a while and dont want to spoil the surprise.
soon I will have a project I can show you..........I promise.........
