another top to finish

I have five of these
yep! FIVE panels of this cat and wisteria
love love love it!
I got them when the nieces were small
thinking I was going to border them each differently
and give them all a cat quilt

yeah, that never happened

but these are so cute that I cant let them sit much longer. I
need to get these done too

why do I let them sit when I am almost done?
I need to grab all of these and just
do a quick and easy quilting on them
and be done

love love love this printed panel.
so playful and fun
(and OLD)

I need to get this done

this is a quilt one of my nieces started when she was about 8
the top is together waiting a back and quilting

it was a quilt of "her life" at the time
this was her skiing block
her Uncle Jody used to take them skiing

this was her hamster. I know I cant draw hamsters LOL
but she made it out of a fuzzy material for 3 d effect

so many memories in this little lap quilt
I need to finish it or have it finished
she is now 20 and it would make a cute
quilt for her to pass to any children she may have
I miss her and looking at this quilt made me miss
her more.
Four of my five nieces have one of these in some stage
this one is ready to quilt
I think some are ready to border
and some need more blocks I think
their Christmas gifts may be staring me in the face!
we will see if I can get my frame up and running
if not, I need to save up and get er done

lilac jelly

April 21, 2015 8 Comments | disclo
My lilacs are blooming, so I decided to make this Lilac Jelly. I will be using these for gifts – kind of a “gourmet” item. I hope to make another batch before my flowers “rust” and are gone.
2 cups lilac blossoms, no leaves or stems
2 1/2 cups boiling water
2 drops purple food coloring, OPTIONAL {the color of the jelly will be a golden/yellow otherwise. I add the coloring for aesthetic appeal.}
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon butter {for less foaming}
4 cups sugar
One box powdered pectin
Place the blossoms in a glass bowl and pour the boiling water on them. Let this steep on the counter overnight {or approximately 8 hours}. Strain the flowers out of the water. Squeeze dry, adding the liquid into what you already have. You should have roughly 2 1/4 cups infused water. Add more water if needed.
Place the flower infusion, lemon juice, butter and pectin in a large heavy bottomed pot. Bring to a boil. Add sugar all at once. Return to boil. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Ladle jelly into clean, sterilized jars, leaving 1/4″ head space. Wipe rims and screw on the lids. Process for 10 minutes in a water bath canner.
Makes 5 half pint jars {5 cups}

goes to show you never know what you can turn into jelly, rally!

new beginnings

got my hair cut again.
hubs hates short hair but I love it
easy to care for and I think I look
more normal

been pruning these guys
to make them healthy and happy

been saving these to store fabric scraps

and delivered these to the new baby

I guess April for me is new beginnings.........
not much sewing going on
more organizing and sprucing up
I guess that needs to be done too

soon I will be back to sewing`
girlfriend and I have already talked about
a sewing date
out in the screen porch
sounds good to me!
sewing and admiring my flowers in one shot!

now look what I started

my sewing friend saw my blocks
made with 2 1/2 inch squares
guess what she is cutting?
2 1/2 inch squares LOL

worse case scenario she says is that if she doesnt make
anything with them.............
I will be gifted with them

whoot whoot............
maybe I should distract her!
cutting them is my least favorite task
ha ha

(insert evil laugh..........)

what does your pincushion look like

this is one I made for a friend this past Christmas.....
it went with her needleholder and notebook.

I would LOVE to make this one........I dont have a pattern but I
am thinking it isnt too hard to do in felt
on a little fabric pillow

these are also cute. and look easy to do.
not sure if mine would stand on its own though

and I FELL IN LOVE.........
I have to make a new pincushion for ME
JUST FOR ME is NOW on the to-do list

grandkids are precious

this is baby Hunter and me. I guess I was talking to him
(big mouth open LOL)
doesnt he look like a doll?
so small and delicate

he was stretching and making noises
until I rubbed his feet. then he went to sleep
how funny is that?
he likes his foot rubbed for sure
we were laughing at that
he is a good baby his mom says so that is good

here is his oldest brother......the hockey champ
he was on his way to see a hockey game
and at half time they each go on the ice
and try a shot at getting the puck in the net
can you say excited????

and here is the little guy that wanted to name his brother (or sister)
Hulk Hogan
He loves wrestling and soccer
he was opening his Easter basket from me
between their schedule, the baby and mine
we didnt get there any sooner.
they are always on the go

two happy boys with new toys
and candy
and a new baby brother

in the garden

this is my Aunt who passed away recently
Tia Jo
she loved elephants (and had over 600 of them )
no not the real alive kind but the collecting kind
I want to put something in my garden to represent her
I am not sure of her favorite flower as she loved
many of them
I would love to put an elephant in the back garden
among the daffodils and bleeding heart

well, I was left in her will. Me and a cousin. BUT it seems
there is a catch. so be it. I dont really care but
my cousin is furious!
My Aunt had no children. she is the one a few years back I
did the 12 days of Christmas for and she got a kick out of it
she said all her friends would call her daily (who knew?)
to find out what present she got for that day of the song
anywho, seems a cousin and I were mentioned in her will
to inherit the life insurance policy. it was the first I had
heard of it. my Aunt never mentioned it to me.
anyway, I called the lawyer on my Dads letter (he was mentioned too and then his  portion is null also)
and the lawyer said he was not sure how they wrote the will that
way because the insurance company will only pay
the person on the policy and if deceased they will pay the estate
(I am thinking her policy must have read to my uncle who has been deceased many years now)
well, I dont know how it  reads but it seems like the boyfriend
who is in charge of the estate will get it.
I personally don't care. It touched me that my Aunt thought enough of me
to include me in her will. If he (the boyfriend) is not following her wishes,
I would not want to be him when I pass on!
My cousin on the other hand wont let it go.
She wrote to me and said she s going to find out more
and that she has some pictures of my family to share
and maybe an elephant! She went to  my Aunts house and got them.
I guess the boyfriend didnt care about pictures and elephants

I am SO happy! I would LOVE to have one of HER elephants!
How cool is that???
to me it is better than any life insurance policy
even if it were lots of money.
THAT ELEPHANT means more to me..........
hopefully it is big enough that it can be seen
among the flowers.
I think Tia would be happy with that........
I know I WILL!!!!!!!!
rest in peace Tia....

tee party

I want to have some crafty time with my nieces
I got some ideas for embellishing some summer tees for fun
this one has stars you cut out of contact paper and attach
then you spray the shirt with a bleach and water mixture
let it in the sun to bleach
rinse off in water then soak a little in vinegar to stop the bleaching.
how cute is that?

this one you cut slits horizontally
evenly spaced in back about half inch to inch apart
then you take the top band of fabric made by the slit
and bring it over and under the next one and repeat
all the way down till the bottom is reached. then you attach
the strip to the bottom by sewing to hold it in place

this one is done with a bleach pen.
great for people with pretty penmanship
vinegar set like the first one
after rinsing off

and this one uses up tons of pony beads
for the kiddos to do
cut off hem of sleves and bottom
then cut slits up to where you mark the shirt
I am thinking mark it with an old used
bar of soap
the edges are sharp and you can see the mark
then it washes off
pull on the tee pieces and tie on the beads
easy peasy
and fun ideas for the kiddos  out of school!

the weather is beautiful

some sleepyheads stayed in bed..........while others ventured out
into the sunshine!

excuse the finger in the picture. but there are GREEN things
growing in the front garden! yes! GREEN........

a closer look tells me they are daffodils, tulips and iris coming up

note to self.............

when buying pet toys make sure you buy one
for EACH pet..........

this little guy chirps and both my cats go CRAZY!!!!!
Did I buy two of them??????

dummy me to start some cat fights!!!!

Dunkin was so funny when I came home from work
he was tossing this thing in the air and playing with it.......
I had to laugh......

poor Phoebe was waiting her turn to play as he hogged it

gotta get one for her too!
usually I waste my money and they dont like them. I guess the bird
sounds from outside triggered the hunting instinct to play
with this toy.

more garden adventures

look! it's my bunny!  no more snow!!!!!!
hoping the clematis I planted there last
year will soon come up again.
I planted three more lillies in front of him
to go with the yellow ones that are there
and some glads in the back row against the
screen porch for some color
hoping it will be a pretty garden this year

here are the three patio blueberry bushes and one long stem is
looking forward to seeing how they grow in containers
love blueberries and these are supposed to produce a lot
I am not sure if we have to wait until next year but we will see

over near the shed the leaves of the grape hyacinth
are so thick that I just grabbed the planters
the two long ones I put the glads in
I know but they can lean against the shed
I alternated yellow and purple back here
and in the center is my new rose bush
I figured I would let it take hold good before deciding on its
permanent home in the garden
it is a multicolored one called Dark Dragon.

I think it is pretty and different from my other roses.

and a little something is coming up in the back garden too.
I am thinking all those daffodils I never got to see last year because of the tree
I had planted about 56 bulbs so I am hoping I get a pretty show of flowers back there!

Are you doing any outside sprucing up yet?
I am truly a farmers daughter............
you can take me off the farm but you cant take the farm out of me
and I love it!!!!!

assessing the damage

see the hole in my rhododendrun?
that whole branch was broken off
from this winter's heavy snows

weird how it is in the back

anyone know how to prune these? it seems like they always have
buds on them

not sure if I will kill it or not
but I wanted to shape it a little better and smaller.

it provides some nice shade from the hot afternoon sun in the summers
out on the screened in porch

also found the hummingbird feeder leaks
so have to bring it back and get it replaced.
I thought it was going down too quickly

and what did this DUMMY do????
why filled it back up again........DUH
now the tree has a lovely area of sticky sap on its roots

is this possible?

Do you think I can make some Christmas stockings
like this?
I know I can make a pattern
I wont put the hole in the bottom
or I could............
the skate would be a seperate piece

I am thinking for my sons family this year
of a hockey theme
they are a hockey family
and with soon to be 3 boys, I think
poor Samantha the Mom is outnumbered LOL

anyway, I saw these and fell in love..........
am thinking I could make the stocking part different colors
for each one of them
and make Moms skate white
also found some hockey Santa pattern to put onto kitchen towels
how cool is that?
boys wanted new quilts too so that is also in the works
I had better get a move on..........
anyone else do these crazy things?
like make your own pattern?

ice dams

this is just some of the damage from ice dams
this winter
the whole length of the house
on one side
every 3 feet or so
this is what you see
I guess for this year it will be some KILZ and paint

and then do one room at a time to replace
never a dull moment around here for sure
could be worse
some people in the area had cars that got smashed with falling roofs
or carports
so I am thankful
we just have annoyances
ice dams! WHO KNEW????

flowers and pretty things

these are the lillies I got some bulbs for
I am hoping to add them to my gardens
I think 3 of them are in the package
I gave one package to my neighbor on the left
for helping me this winter with snow and ice removal
she had admired my lillies last year and I thought I would get her some of her
own to plant and enjoy

I also got a ton of gladiolus
they were my Moms favorite flower
so I will try and plant them near the shed I think
maybe some out front too
we will see if I can support them as they get tall and fall over

I think I got a bag of mixed, a bag of all yellow and one all purple
so I think I SHOULD have a profusion of gorgeous color
we will see if my thumb is green or black LOL

and I need to find some lupines or something in my garden for my Aunt Jo
she is the one that just passed recently
she loved her gardens and her elephants
maybe I can find an elephant statue
for the garden in back and plant some flowers
in her memory
My gardens so far have been memory gardens with some
pansies and petunias that my Gram loved, bleeding heart that Aunt Jessie
loved, gladiolus and lily for Mom
clematis for Aunt Mary
and I need something for Aunt Jo
we will see what I can find. I know it will  come to me
I want all my gardening mentors in my gardens
(ulterior motive here.....they can help with this green thumb! LOL)
